Most advice about promoting on Reddit is written from memory. This page is written from the rules themselves — we read 3,188 published rules across 351 communities and classified every one. The figures below regenerate from live data each week, so they never drift from what the communities actually say.
Of the 363 communities in this directory, 1 permits self-promotion openly. Not 1 percent — 1 community, 0.3% of the directory. 116 ban it outright and 217 allow it only under conditions such as a dedicated thread, a karma threshold, or prior participation.
That is the single most useful thing to know before posting anywhere on Reddit: the default is not permission. It is restriction.
Every community's published rules are fetched from its own public rules endpoint, then classified by keyword analysis into banned, restricted, allowed, or unknown where no rules are published. 351 of 363 communities had rules available, giving 334 classified communities and 29 without enough information to judge. Collection runs weekly.
The method is deliberately conservative. A community counts as allowing self-promotion only when its rules say so plainly, which is why the allowed figure is so low — plenty of communities tolerate promotion in practice without ever writing it down. Treat these numbers as what communities state, not what they quietly permit.

Counting communities understates the problem. Weighted by members, 29.4% of the audience in this directory sits inside communities that ban promotion, and 65.4% sits behind conditional rules. The reachable-without-restriction audience is 0.4%.
Together the 116 banning communities hold 303.2M members. These are not fringe places — they include some of the largest interest communities on the platform, which is why untargeted promotion fails so reliably.
